Beer and loathing

This book feels like a modern day attempt at recreating Thompson’s masterpiece of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and it is done well, adding in iPods, cell phones, texting, and of course the use of profound, and just plain crazy run-on metaphores, all with-out the bats and hard drugs.

Star Trek Review: "Giving her all she's got"

“Star Trek” does for the series what the last few James Bond films have done for its own franchise, breathing life into a dynasty that has been in steady decline since the death of visionary founder Gene Roddenberry and essentially revitalizing an animated corpse.

X-Men Origins: Not fit for human consumption

Most X-Men films verge on the edge of gratuity, but X-Men Wolverine: Origins vaults off of that precipice on the back of an exploding motorcycle; raping your eyes in the process and becoming a standard bearer for action movie cliché, where cool things are done because they look cool.

Man Love at its finest

“I Love You, Man” is about a guy who’s almost got it all. Everything seems to be falling into place for Peter Klaven, played by Paul Rudd (Of “Every Good Comedy Made In the Last 5 Years” fame), he’s got the girl, almost landed the job, but something is missing, a BFF. Enter Sydney Fife, played by Jason Segel (Of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” fame), the classic casual life drifter best bud that your girlfriend or wife never liked archetype. At the behest of his fiancée, Klaven begins the courtship of Sydney to become his best man at his upcoming wedding, and hilarity ensues.

Franz Ferdinand's new album reviewed

Franz Ferdinand’s “Tonight” is an album that I would call, built for the masses. The opening track, “Ulysses” is a funk filled track that talks about drug use. I know there are some that would call that immature, but the song has a great beat and is a great song to plug in while walking somewhere.

Tom Cruise Hates Hitler Like The Rest Of Us

Tom Cruise as an eyepatch wearing Nazi spearheading an assassination attempt on Hitler? Such is the premise of Valkyrie, the Christmas-day-released film based on the story of Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg, a German officer in Hitler’s regime that mounts one of many (spoiler alert if you flunked out of public school!) failed attempts on the life of the evil mustached mastermind.

10 questions for “10 Questions” director

I recently had the pleasure to screen the film “10 Questions for the Dali Lama”, a documentary written, directed, and filmed by travel documentary filmmaker Rick Ray. The film was poignant, powerful, and a joy to watch. I had the further pleasure of interviewing the filmmaker after the film. Rick Ray is a man quick to laugh and with a sharp wit. I hope to see him back this way again. What follows is the interview.

Dead Space... All the fun of monster killing, in space

EA has done an amazing job of crafting a realistic and horribly frightening atmosphere. The ship really draws you in and feels like it could be a real and terrifying place. The small corridors with lots of access for hungry beasts will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole game, and you end up approaching everything with suspicion and fear.

Hiking the Pacific North West

The first thing my companion and I did was finding a campsite. It was a nice little state-run park that had twenty campsites in it. The site was on the Washington side of the river and my tent was about twenty feet from the river. My tent was also about a hundred feet from a major railroad track, a fact that I did not find out until about three in the morning. Although very nicely located centrally to all things interesting in the area (about ten miles East of Stevenson, Washington along Highway 14) I would never camp there again due to the trains.

A waltz through Pike Place Market, Seattle

Our first stop was a tiny little stand in the middle of a hallway. I might have missed it if not for the line of about a hundred people that were all waiting for what the booth served. The place is called Daily Dozen Doughnuts. In the booth you can see a machine that is automatically pumping out mini doughnuts and frying them to a crispy perfection. People line up for hours just to get a dozen of these mini doughnuts dusted with sugar and other flavors. They are served in a paper bag that is very quickly soaked through with oil. The taste is excellent, crispy, and my favorite is the cinnamon sugar.

Two Weekends with Warhammer: Online

Right now I’m writing this as I feel the burn-out of hardcore playing. How many times can I level to 20 before I get bored? I’m waiting for the real game now, because at the end of every preview weekend and beta, all characters on all servers are deleted. No fun. I’m waiting for a character I can actually keep and see grow to maximum level and do end-game content with.

I really still want to believe, or tearing apart the new X-Files movie

Footprints and tire tracks that have dirtied the snow by stirring up the earth underneath and creating an ambivalent mix. All at dusk. That was perhaps the scariest and most mysterious part of the film. Sitting there I began to wonder if maybe something nefarious, interesting, and with a conclusion could be afoot.

Restaurant: Strega: has it reached its saturation point?

As with many new restaurants, Strega has some problems to iron out.
The service staff is new and overwhelmed by the place’s quick success. When my friends and I arrived, the staff was very friendly and extremely accommodating. However, it took us over two hours to get our entire meal. The service was slow, the kitchen staff overwhelmed, and our experience suffered for it.

Blockbuster movies due out this summer

“Iron Man,” “Speed Racer,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” and the new “Indiana Jones” movie all premiered this month, but this is just the beginning of at least a dozen more titles that are slated to hit theaters this summer.

---

"Indy 4" movie is creative and fresh

It’s tough to not spoil the secrets of the new Indiana Jones movie when talking about it. “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” is a creative action flick, packed with the usual antics of Dr. Henry Jones Jr. (Harrison Ford), adventurous archaeologist and part-time teacher (known as Indiana or Indy). After 19 years, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas team up again to create the fourth installment to the Indiana franchise.

“Spin” brings humor and witty satire to the OSU stage

It’s not often that a musical is produced that humorously depicts the strain between freedom of speech, morality, religion, politics, and art, but “Spin,” written by John Frohnmayer, does just that.

New “Speed Racer” is cool beans!

“Speed Racer” is a kaleidoscope of classic sass. If you like silliness and racecar driving, you’ll probably dig this chaotically stupendous movie. But, if you don’t—then “Speed Racer” just might cause an epileptic breakdown.
