The minority race

Sunday, August 31, 2008

Well, the Democrats have an African-American man. So what do the Republicans do? They pony up with a woman, a good, old-fashioned, mother of five, who fought big oil up in Alaska. Both of them take the puppy-dog approach, where they look up at you with those eyes…
So who do you vote for? Who is more adorable and cutesy?
Gosh, I just can’t pick.

I suppose I’ll have to do some real political research.
I just find it funny, the tit-for-tat games that these political groups play. One side grabs someone or something, so one side grabs another. Either way they’re pandering to demographics and trying their hardest to secure whichever votes the other side hasn’t got yet. What happened to the good ol’ days of just being the better candidate? What happened to making promises to people and following through to stay in office? It used to be if you weren’t doing your job, you were out.
Think about it, the future of our nation (and therefore our lives) all hinges on a dog and pony show, i.e. whoever advertises the best. It doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter at all which candidate is really better. It’s like an advertising campaign that has a specious product whose quality can’t really be determined…but who cares? BUY! BUY! BUY!
Well, it’s our fault. It’s absolutely our fault. We have become so disinterested and disenfranchised with politics that they practically have to turn campaign rallies into musicals just to get us to come and pay attention. Not to mention free food and stickers, and who doesn’t love those? They couldn’t just hand us their life story and an essay about why they’d be the best president and leave it in our hands. No one would vote.
To the very root of our society we’ve become a TV culture that can’t pay attention to anything that isn’t flashy and over-the-top. We’re an entertainment culture to whatever bitter end awaits us. Not only has this affected our obesity and health levels, but it’s rocked our governmental system to the core.
Democracy doesn’t work if people don’t care.
And democracy doesn’t work if people only pay attention to the candidate with the better song and dance.
So get up. Learn. Become involved. And for the love of biscuits, vote, about something, even if it’s just on who your local sheriff is. Take some control over your life, so I can sleep at night. Because you people are killing ME. And that’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it? Am I kidding?
