"For the love of Pete!"

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

As un-American and as un-political as this may sound, I have no idea whom I will vote for president this time around. I usually support a candidate right away and stick with that choice throughout the entire campaign. But this time I’m really not sure. And I’m sure I’ll get angry emails for saying this, but I’m not sure that I will vote this year for my commander in chief.

This all stems from the beginning before candidates even emerged. Before the election process began, our country was in turmoil. The war in Iraq, that many say should never have started, while others say that it was the finishing of W’s father’s war. The economy was starting it’s nose dive into that big pile o’ dung that future generations will have to endure as well as their offspring most likely.

At that point, I knew that the presidential race of 2008 was going to be interesting. It was going to take one hell of a leader to turn the country around. Whoever took the all-important position of leader of the USA was going to have to fill in some really, REALLY, big holes.

Names are thrown around. Hillary, Obama, McCain are the out runners. Along with the smaller ones that if you say there name someone around would say, “Who?” For myself, I was impressed by Hillary, but that is beside my point today.

Our donkey and elephant are chosen. Obama and McCain are the winners of the presidential nominees. Okay so now what?

Here is the heart of my difficulty. I have issues with both candidates. I feel that my voting would be voting for the lesser of two evils. And for the love of Pete!* I don’t care if this makes advertising sound bad, but I’m sick and tired of the stinking political ads!

These ads are by far the nastiest, most blatant attack ads that I’ve seen. Perhaps it’s a reflection of society today that nothing shocks the general masses. I don’t really care what someone did twenty years ago for 5 minutes or whom they might have shook hands with last Thursday.

All I want is for a presidential nominee to tell me why they are qualified. I don’t want to hear a presidential nominee tell me why the other guy sucks. Just tell me about your CV and let that be all she wrote.

With all the bashing and mud slinging that has been going on has made me quite a bitter voter. I really have no flipping clue how the hell I’m going to vote or even if I’m going to do anything about this election!

If anything, this election has shown me what I don’t want an election to be like.

  • Side not completely unrelated: Do you ever wonder where sayings come from? I wrote love of Pete!, and had to wonder. For the love of Pete! – a versatile exclamation that can be used in almost any situation but is often delivered as a complacent complaint.
Source: Pete, the dog from The Little Rascals.
Usage: Ethel said to Abner, “When’re you gonna cut that lawn?” To which Abner replied, “For the love of Pete, Ethel! I woulda done did it yesterday if it would get you to shut your trap!”
*Another completely unrelated and yet related at the same time: In order to change we must be sick and tired of being sick and tired. ~Author Unknown
