Hope for the homeless

Do you need a head start on spring cleaning? Give your extra clothes to the clothing drive!
Collection boxes are located around LBCC’s Albany campus. The clothing drive started Jan. 11 and will end Jan. 29.
Abel Soriano, a member of Student Life and Leadership who organized the clothing drive, said that “this winter has been especially cold. I felt this would benefit the greater community.”
They are currently seeking mostly winter clothes, such as jackets, scarves, gloves, and blankets, but they will take anything that could help somebody in the long run.
The donations will be given to Albany Helping Hands Homeless Shelter. Soriano said he chose this organization because they do a lot of hands-on help with the homeless. He also feels this is an organization that does not currently get enough donations.
According to the Albany Helping Hands website they provide shelter to an average of 110 homeless people every day of the year. They also help by offering courses on resume writing, office etiquette, job retention, nutrition, GED review, and more.
Soriano said the drive started fairly slowly, but has gained some momentum toward the end of last week. He says most of the donations have been from staff members around campus.
He asks that his fellow students look in their closets and get rid of old clothes.
“Instead of letting them sit there, put them to good use. Help out your neighbors,” Soriano said.
