The Commuter

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

I do not want to insult anyone’s intelligence by writing about the same topic week after week. However, I do hope that there are individuals out there who read this article enough to recognize the trends and repetition. And to those people, I applaud you. Taking an active part in understanding the culture that surrounds you is essential to peacefully integrating the differences between yourself and others.

Ballot Measures 66 & 67. Maybe it’s dangerous to lead with such a volatile or disengaging topic. I hope I haven’t lost too many readers, but to those who have continued reading, thanks. Even if you have already made up your mind about how you will vote, what is the harm in hearing the opposition? Today at 1 p.m. (previously announced in last week’s article to begin at noon) in the Forum Auditorium, guest speakers Representative Sara Gelser and Senator Frank Morse will be on hand to give opposing views to these two hot topic issues. Each guest will provide a short presentation followed by a Q&A with the event moderator. Suggestions for additional questions may be submitted to asgpres@linnbenton.edu. This event is free and open to the public.

The Student Life & Leadership office is seeking out the leaders of tomorrow … or least the leaders for next year. If you will be continuing your education at LBCC next year (2010-2011) and want a chance to get involved with more on campus, then consider applying for a position with the Associated Student Government (ASG) or the Student Programming Board (SPB). Each group has eight positions open; however, each group has a different process for selecting their members. The ASG has an electoral process in which students submit an application for candidacy, campaign, and then await the results of a general election. Elections are to be held during the eighth week of this term. The SPB differs from the ASG during their selection process in that, instead of elections, their members are selected through interviews. Both groups have applications available in the Student Life & Leadership office. Applications for either group are due by January 29 at noon. Or, if you just want to hear a bit more, stop by and see us.
