Elections: Why were they really postponed?

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Last year the elections were inadequately advertised, resulting in three people who registered to run, and 61 votes being cast. The result was that write-in Hannah Gzik won the election for ASG president. When the ASG held a meeting three weeks after Gzik took office they finished in one minute. The ASG then elected their own friends into positions without much help from the student body. This year, the staff at The Commuter has helped get the word out to get people to vote. The only problem is; people are voting and writing names that the ASG had not planned for. The elections have been postponed due to website issues… twice! The real question is; is it the website that keeps screwing up, or do they just hate the outcome because they aren’t getting what they want? Do we have a “Bush” in our own government who can’t handle losing? The first time that elections were postponed, there were signs and banners in a few places. The second time, I didn’t even find out until I received a forwarded email about it. Two positions are still open, but only because the write in winners didn’t receive 40% of the votes. As of now, voting is closed, but they are still taking applications, with no date for another voting session for these positions. The new officers will take office in May, but these positions that are still open won’t be decided on until then, supposedly. Meetings are on Wednesdays in Student Life and Leadership, and are open to anyone. New officers are not required to attend until May when they take office. So, my question for ASG is; How do you plan to fill these empty spots, without just picking your friends? I demand another voting opportunity to fill these spots! I find it ironic that after last year’s escapade, you still managed to screw up the elections this year… again!

26,000 served students per year in the LBCC community and 61 votes…what does this say about how folks view the importance of ASG?
