Going Greek for philanthropies

The Commuter

Every year fraternities and sororities at Oregon State University participate and hold philanthropies to raise money for different charities that fight cancer, AIDS, alzheimers, etc. These fundraisers raise hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Students accumulate hundreds of thousands of man hours working and volunteering around Corvallis. Not only are they working to better the world, they are having fun while doing it, and what’s the best way to have fun and celebrate the success of your charity function? Throw a party!

Frat parties, social organizations, philanthropies, and staying active within the community could all describe what Greek life is about. And it goes without saying that partying is a huge part of the college experience. Well, partying the Greek way is on a whole other level. Fraternities are the best staging ground to throw an epic social function and they usually house some of the best rounded gentlemen in Corvallis. Kyle Kish, a social chair for his fraternity likes to prioritize accordingly when it comes to partying and participating in philanthropies, “there aren’t as many philanthropies as there are parties; however, you put a lot more time, effort, and thought into the philanthropies because they are for a good cause, but I do like to party.”

Sororities like Sigma Kappa put a lot of work into their philanthropies and they make sure people have fun while participating. A good example was their Side Out function that raised thousands of dollars for alzheimers research. “The results of the philanthropy immediately give money to people who need it, it’s really rewarding because you put so much time into it but it’s also fun. Most fraternities and sororities will celebrate the success of their charity with partying, but again it’s all in the spirit of a good cause,” said Samantha Silva, a Sigma Kappa member.

Dwight Wozich, an active member when it comes to charities, gave his thoughts about the subject. “I think it is important to put the time and effort into philanthropies, I’d rather participate in a charity and be active in my community than go drink at a party.”
