September 13, 122: Another brick in the wall
The Romans began construction on Hadrian’s Wall. Named after Emperor Hadrian, the Wall literally spans the entirety of northern England, from the west coast to the east coast. The wall was built to keep out the Picts (who originally lived in Scotland). Although it is highly decayed, much of the wall still stands today.
September 14, 1959: To the moon, Luna.
The first man-made object reaches the moon. Soviet satellite “Luna 2” loses control and plows into the surface of the moon — probably not what they had in mind.
September 15, 1916: Much thanks to tanks
Tanks are used in combat for the first time during WWI in the battle of the Somme. The original tank, the British Mark I (very original name), could go at a whopping top speed of 4 mph.
September 16, 1908: Keep your bureaucratic hands off my Saturn
General Motors is founded. Recently, after declaring bankruptcy and having a large amount of stock purchased by the U.S. Treasury Department, GM earned the nickname “Government Motors”.
September 17, 1630: Bean town
Boston is founded by Puritans. Fortunately for the world, the Puritans were pushed out and the Irish moved in.
September 18, 324: Monotheism for all
Emperor Constantine of the Western Roman Empire defeats Licinius at the battle of Chrysopolis. In doing so, Constantine became emperor of the entire Roman Empire. Constantine’s position of absolute power allowed him to spread Christianity throughout the empire, and eventually, Europe.
September 19, 1959: Mr. Khruschchev’s Wild Ride
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev is banned from visiting Disneyland. This is the true cause of the eventual fall of the USSR. Their leader just couldn’t handle the pressure of not being able to visit the happiest place on Earth, which is obviously not Russia.
