The Beavers brought down #1 ranked USC Trojans in the Reeser beaver dam, their stadium, Thursday the 25th of September. This game that was televised on ESPN nationally was to be an easy win for the Southern Cal team with a reported win of 25 points. However, this was not the case as the score of 21-27 proves.
By the end of the second quarter the Trojans sat on the scoreboard with a goose egg and only a handful of firsts with not even a hint of a third down conversion. One only can wonder what was being said during the half time break in the locker room of the top rated team. Time would tell if the Beavers could hold the team at bay and not crumble under the pressure.
The third quarter started with USC David Buehler punting for 68 yards, which was returned by James Rodgers for 32 yards to place the ball on the Oregon State 32-yard line. Then, the Beavers couldn’t connect anything together punting the ball away. In the next USC possession a mere 2 minutes into the third quarter, USC scores a touchdown a
nd the extra point, placing them on the score board for the first time in the game.
OSU gets the ball again and still can’t put the first down with anything. USC took the ball again from the 30-yard line, and achieved another touchdown and an extra point, bringing the score up to USC 14 vs. OSU 21, at the end of the third quarter.
During the fourth quarter, in the last 5 minutes of the game the Beavers’ Greg Laybourn intercepted a pass from USC quarterback Mark Sanchez at the USC 30-yard line, returning the ball to the second yard line of USC. First and goal at the USC 2-yard line, Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 2; touchdown Beavers. The extra point was missed. USC 14 vs. OSU 21. It was USC’s ball again.
With less than two and a half minutes left in the game USC pulled off another touchdown: USC 21, OSU 27. With just a minute and 19 seconds OSU held onto the ball, rushing with no attempted passes. Time ran out. The final score: USC 21 vs. OSU 27.
This is only the second time in Oregon State history to upset a number one seated team, the first time being against USC in 1967. USC has lost the last three in four games at the OSU beaver dam. Beaver’s next move is to take on No. 17 Utah at Utah home.
